Why Use an Offset Driver?

An offset driver is a great club for golfers who have a hard time hitting their driver consistently and struggle to get the ball in the air. An offset driver has its head set back from the golf shaft. This makes both the club and the ball easier to control. It is most often used by high- and intermediate handicap golfers.

Offset driver -- the look

An offset drive resembles a normal driver. It is about the same length and the same weight. It features the same large and powerful driving face that at normal driver does. However, just before the shaft joins the club head, it takes a perpendicular turn backwards to form a small "L" shape. The club head is attached at the bottom of that L-shaped joint.

Purpose

Most golfers who go to an offset driver do so because they fail to get the ball high in the air and regularly do not hit the ball straight either. Most often, that failure is caused by a speeding up of the swing. The golfer is anxious to hit the ball, he rushes his swing, and he looks up to see the results. That shot is often off-course. The offset head of the club serves as a reminder not to speed up the swing. The golfer realizes that he will not get his shot off by rushing it. Speeding up your hands will not help you hit the ball sooner with an offset club. The shaft will get to the ball location before the club head.

Results

Golfers realize they have a problem with timing and execution, and that's why they go to an offset club. The results are often quite good. Most teachers and playing partners observe a significant slowing of the swing.

Execution

The execution of a steady and smooth swing with an offset club head generally results in a high and straight shot when the golfer has an offset club. The club face will have an "up" angle when it makes contact with the golf ball. This will assure that the ball gets high in the air. If the timing of the swing is adequate, the ball will also go straight as long as the club head is facing the target at impact.

Expert Insight

Many golfers would never consider using an offset club because they feel it may give them an unfair competitive advantage. The idea that a club head has to be set back in order to help the golfer hit the ball high and straight does not sit well with some golfers who feel they should be able to "earn" that kind of effective golf shot. However, the rules of golf allow an offset driver and it's not wrong to try it out. It helps golfers think about and execute a consistent swing. The club is not doing it for the golfer. The golfer still has to do the work.

Golf Club Sets for Beginners

As a beginning golfer, you want to make sure that the game is both enjoyable and educational. This all starts with having the right tools for what you are trying to accomplish. Several golf club manufactures have their own spin on how the golf club should look and feel. This guide will help you understand the most important points to consider.

The Beginning

A golf club set, when on the course, can consist of up to 14 clubs. Each player will need his own set of clubs. To begin, you may want to rent clubs from the course--if they are available--in order to see if you enjoy playing the game. Once you have played a few times, you will then be ready for your own set.

Types

There are three types of clubs. There can be many different styles within each type.
The three types of clubs are metal (or wood) woods, irons and putters.

Clubs are categorized by a numeric system. Woods can range from 1 to 11 or even 12. The most common numbers, though, are 1,3 and 5. Irons can range from 1 to 14, with the 10 and higher numbers usually called wedges.

The putter is the only club that is not numbered, but it also is the only club that will have extreme differences in the size and shapes that are available. The other clubs are fairly uniform in their look.

Considerations

You will need to keep a few things in mind as you shop for clubs. First, the clubs are different because of what is called loft. The loft of the club will determine the distance that the golf ball will travel when you hit it. As a beginner you will want clubs that have a higher loft, because this will allow for more back spin on the ball and less side spin so that the ball does not curve as much when hit.

A typical beginner set would include a 1 wood (called a driver), a 3 wood and a 5 wood. The driver should be between 9 and 11 degrees in loft. The 3 and 5 woods probably won't have their lofts listed on the club itself.

You will want a 4 or 5 iron as the longest Iron in your bag. Getting a 1, 2 or 3 iron can happen later, once you get used to the game a little more.

There will be different types of shafts for you to choose from. As a beginner, steel shafts will allow you to control the golf club more during the swing; a composite shaft might have a little too much variance. From there, getting fitted for your proper lie angle and loft will be handled by a club-fitting professional. If you are not able to work with a fitting professional, your local golf store or clubhouse shop will have people on hand who can help you.

Benefits

You do not have to buy a set of golf clubs "off the rack." Buying a stock set of clubs can actually cause you more harm than good. Getting a set of fitted golf clubs is not as expensive as it once was and will allow you to swing the clubs the way you need to--based on your body dimensions--and will be a more enjoyable experience for you.

Going to a golf store or even a course clubhouse will allow you to talk with a pro or person who knows the different types of clubs available and what would be recommended for a beginner based on the latest technology.

Misconceptions

There are always misconceptions about golf clubs. First, you need to know that just because you are a beginner; it does not mean that you should avoid buying the best name brands available. If you feel like you are going to be playing a lot of golf, investing into a better brand will mean a better return on your investment. Plus, as you improve you will already have quality clubs. If you feel like you are not going to be playing very much, buying something a little more affordable might be better choice.

Always stay within a specific budget when shopping for golf clubs because as the technology changes, the prices can change as well. The price of golf clubs is often a source of the misconceptions about the game. A beginner set of golf clubs could cost as little as $100 to $150. As you move into the more advanced technologies, you may spend $300 or $400 just on a driver! On average, however, a typical set of clubs that includes three woods, nine irons and a putter will be priced between $200 and $500. Add in a bag and you can have a set of clubs that will give you many years of enjoyment in the game.

Expert Insight

Purchasing a new set of golf clubs is exciting. You will have the opportunity to look at different brands and different styles, which can be somewhat overwhelming. Take your time when choosing a new set of clubs. Ask to hit the different types of clubs on the driving range or in an indoor facility. Plan on going back at least three or four times to see how they feel on different days and if anything new will change your decision. Being fitted for clubs will help build your game and provide a better experience when playing.

Start Playing "the Real Golf"

A complete guide for people, who would like to start playing golf

Golf is a sport, which requires physical as well as psychical endurance. To start playing golf, you'll need to buy a few things (golf clubs, "golf clothes", golf shoes...)

The equipment:
- Golf clubs are usually "factory made", so you can pick between hundreds of golf clubs. A beginner should buy "regular" shafted golf clubs; with a bit bigger head (regular clubs are more flexible, so your mistakes won’t be so noticeable).

- "Golf clothes" aren't much different from regular clothes. Male's golf clothes should consist of: A polo shirt and some pants. Females’ golf clothes should consist of: A polo shirt and some pants or a skirt. It's up to you to decide what kind and what color of clothes you want to have.

- Golf shoes are very important. Your foot must "feel comfortable" in them and they must also provide good traction (so you wont slip). Don't worry about the spikes, they are changeable.

- The golf glove. Left handed golfer should get a right handed glove, while the right handed golfers should get a left handed glove. Your hand must fit "tightly" into the glove.

Now that you have your equipment, you can start golfing. I would strongly recommend, that you hire a golf coach at first (he will show you the basics and give you some advice)

To learn the swing, you'll need about 10-15 hours with your golf coach (that's the basic swing).

If you want to improve your game/swing, you must practice a lot (at least 4-5 times a week). To do that, you can hire a golf coach or buy a book/video explaining and showing you the correct swing or you can watch tutorial videos online (they are the best choice).

If you practice a lot, you'll see the improvement in less than a month.

Using Fairway Woods Golf Clubs

Fairway woods are perhaps the most underutilized clubs in the average golfer's bag. Fairway woods can be used from a variety of lies---in the rough, in the fairway, off the tee---but many golfers feel completely out of place with a fairway wood in hand. Learn to hit your fairway woods and you'll add a valuable variety to your golf game.

Ball Position

The ball should be positioned slightly in front of the center of your stance, but not as far as the inside of your front heel, where you might position a driver. This position allows your torso to make a full turn back and then forward through the ball, making contact with the ball at the nadir of the club head's path. Don't overswing with a fairway wood; make a simple, compact swing and let the extra weight in the club head do its work to provide extra ball speed, carry and distance.

Low Point of Contact

When you're hitting a driver, optimal contact consists of making contact on the upswing (that's one reason why you tee the ball up). Fairway woods are different: perfect contact with a fairway wood means making contact with the ball exactly at the lowest point of your swing. The added loft on a fairway wood provides all the lift and backspin that you need; there is no need to try to scoop the ball into the air. Swing down to the ball to make the crispest contact and impart the backspin that will give your shot extra loft and carry and allow it to land soft, with reduced roll.

Sweeping Motion

While you should not hit your fairway woods the same way you hit your driver, you should also avoid making a swing and contact too similar to a low iron or wedge. With a wedge or low iron, you make contact with the ball by hitting down on it. This action traps the ball against the turf and produces exceptional backspin. But with fairway woods, you don't want to drive the ball into the turf. Instead, practice a sweeping motion, a swing that just brushes the ground at the point of contact, driving the ball neither down (like a wedge) nor up (like a driver), but straight forward.

Buy Cheap Golf Club sets

Golfing can get expensive. Save money by finding golf clubs for cheap.

One of the best ways to buy a cheap golf club set is to go to a used golf club store. Check Google to find one near you. Here you can find cheap golf club sets that may only be a year or two old and are often in excellent condition. Their previous owner might have just wanted new ones and got rid of his old set of golf clubs.

Another option is eBay and craigslist. You can get good deals on cheap golf club sets when people need to get rid of them fast.

If you want to purchase new golf club sets, try a store called golf in stock. If they do not have one near you, then you can go to their website at golfinstock.com I purchased my current putter from golf in stock a few years ago for $9.99! And I laugh every time I out putt someone who uses a putter they paid several hundred dollars for.

When buying a cheap golf club set try to look for last year’s model. They will usually be discounted and are just as good.

One of the best ways to improve your game is to get your clubs custom fitted and sized for you. Check with your local pro shop to find out more about this easy way to improve your game and lower your scores.

Good luck and shoot low!

Practice Golf Indoors

Whether it is raining, snowing or you are just having a slow day at the office; there are plenty of ways to practice your putting indoors.

One of the most important parts of putting is ball striking. It doesn't matter how well you lined up the ball or how accurate your line is, if you don't hit the ball right your chances of making the putt decrease significantly.

To practice proper ball striking, take two band aids and place them on either side of the sweet spot of your putter. Now when you practice your putting, if you do not hit the ball correctly you will notice the ball doesn't go as far and feels differently coming off of the putter.

Another easy indoor golf practice drill you can do is work on keeping your head down while you putt. Most people have a tendency to lift their head as soon as they strike the ball. To practice keeping your head down, stand about 6 feet from a wall. Putt the ball and do not lift your head up until you head the ball hit the wall. This will ensure you are focused on the act of hitting the ball and not the result of the putt. It will go in or miss regardless of whether or not you are watching it. Personally I would much rather risk not seeing the ball fall in than look up and see it miss.

Another easy indoor golf practice drill is distance control. set something on the floor about 10-15 feet away from you can try to get your ball to stop at exactly that distance. Do not worry about accuracy just focus on distance. Experiment with moving the marker closer and farther away. This will help you eliminate 3 putts on the course the next time you go out.

One final indoor golf practice drill you can do is putt for accuracy. You can do this drill with one of those auto-ball returner machines or with a cup laying on the ground. (Preferably a plastic non breakable cup) Take 3 golf balls and set them 3 feet from the "hole" once you make all 3 putts in a row. Move back 3 more feet. Make all 3 putts and then move back another 3 feet. Continue this until you can no longer make 3 out of 3 (or you run out of room)

The short game is where most people give up extra strokes. If you can learn to putt better, you can lower your score dramatically.

Good luck and shoot low!

How to Golf Like a Pro...Even if You're A Shankin' Amateur

So you want to play golf like a pro, when even on your best days on the course, you are reminded (by your own shots or the verbal shots of others) that you're nothing more than a shankin' amateur? Well, if so, then this is the article you want to read because in it, you will soon discover the story of the locks and keys that will serve as your guide to playing one of the greatest games the world has ever known.

The Lock.

You have a mental perception that you cannot drive, nor hit an approach shot, nor hit a chip, pitch, or sand wedge ---let alone hitting two putts or less on the green. The perception is real---Tiger Woods may be the greatest golfer in history, but guess what? Tiger never shot a 59 in competition, which is the lowest round ever shot in professional competition (which was first achieved by Al Geiberger in the 1970's, and has been followed by Chip Beck in the 1980's, David Duval in the 1990's...and maybe one or two others since then). This means that the greatest golfer we've ever seen is just like you: in no tournament has he ever driven, chipped, sand wedged or putting to perfection. So then what is the key to the mental block that we hit the ball like a shankin' amateur? The key is this: PMA.

The Key.

PMA is an acronym for Positive Mental Attitude. Have you ever seen Tiger quit? No, he, like all good golfers, learns from his mistakes, even relishes them as an opportunity to practice better so that he will play better. A good professional, the kind of player you'd like to become, has learned that the art of golf is an art of patience. If you see professional golf on TV or in person you will be startled at how easy and consistent their swings are: in common, they all take their clubs back, swing through the ball, follow through to the target, then chase the result. If you can sweep the floor, you can hit a golf ball like a pro. When you sweep, do you violently jerk the broom back, then stop at impact, hoping the dirt reaches the dustpan? Or do you bring the broom back and sweep through the dirt, then follow through to the dustpan? The laws of physics are immutable: they don't change because you are either hitting a golf ball or sweeping a floor. Sweep consistently and evenly, following through to the intended target (a dustpan or a hole on the green) and soon you'll no longer be playing like a shankin' amateur, playing instead with the measured cadence of a pro.

The Lock & Key.

So now I've told you about the lock (your mental perception) and I've shown you the key to opening the lock (adopting a positive mental attitude ---or PMA), so now what action must you take? I've already shown you: you sweep with your golf clubs, rather than just club the ball like it's a baby seal. Watch the pros sweep--they are all consistent with the ease at which they strike the ball. So, if a pro sweeps easily and effortlessly, yet you struggle with shot after shot, striking the ball violently and with great effort (to often hideous results) what would logic tell you? It would tell you to follow the ease of a pro, a method which will have you striking the ball for distance as well as accuracy.

But never let anyone tell you that you cannot improve.

Not everyone can be Tiger Woods, but anyone can think like the champion he is.

Ways to Take Up Golf

Golf can be defined as a game in which golf clubs with wooden or metal heads are used to hit a small, white ball into a number of holes, usually 9 or 18, in succession, situated at various distances over a course having natural or artificial obstacles, the object being to get the ball into each hole in as few strokes as possible.

Golf is becoming an increasingly popular sport, for every age group, men and women alike. It is never to late to pick up golf.

For first timers there are some things you should accomplish before hitting the course.

** Taking lessons from a professional may be a good idea to make sure you are doing everything correctly.

** Buy your own set of clubs. If you plan on planning just a few times a year, it’s better to rent or borrow from a friend.

** Begin with a course of a low degree of difficulty.

** For middle age player’s golf is a great way to stay fit. It is not a strenuous sport but will help lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol because of its aerobic activity it involves.

Before playing stretch and do some strength exercises to avoid getting hurt. Also, learn the proper ways to hit the ball to not injury yourself. You may want to begin by going to a golfing range to practice before hitting the green.

How to Puchase Golf Clubs

Finding the right golf equipment and golf clubs is important. You need to know your skill level before choosing clubs because the common myth is that you buy a better club and you will instantly be a better golfer. A great golfer can play with a cheap set of clubs and do very well because they have the technique down.

First you need to find a local golf shop where you can test the clubs that you are interested in buying. You may eventually decide to purchase online or at a discounter but trying them out is important. You want to see which ones feel right for you and there is no better way to do this then go to a golf store with a hitting facility.

Next you should never let a salesman over sell you. There are so many great clubs and drivers that you do not need to buy the most expensive thing they have. In many cases the salesperson is trying to meet a goal or quota with a certain brand and does not have your best interest in mind.

If you are tight on a budget then you may want to consider buying second hand clubs. Remember that clubs are sturdy and they last a long time so buying in the secondary market can be a great way for you to save money. In many cases you can find a high end set that is one or two years old that will be great for your needs.

Remember that whether you decide to buy new or used you want to get a feel for the different brand names that are out there before making a purchase. Try not to over buy because the club is not going to make you a great golfer, you can only do that.

Gifts for Golf Lovers

The words "He is impossible to buy for" will never be uttered about someone who plays golf. A variety of gift ideas are available for anyone who plays the game.

Balls
Golf balls disappear like hot dogs at a cookout. A golfer can never have too many, and they last. According to Titleist.com, golf balls can be safely stored for five years or more.

Clubs
Be careful if you're considering buying a set of golf clubs as a gift. Golfers have a very personal relationship with clubs; certain clubs feel right, others don't. More advanced clubs are often sized to fit the individual who will be using them.

Lessons

If Tiger Woods has a golf coach, then everyone should have a golf coach. Or at least a few lessons. No matter the skill level of a player, lessons can always help a golfer improve his game.

Vacations
Imagine how appreciative your favorite golfer will be if you send them on a golf vacation. It's become a big part of the golf industry, with courses offering packages that include travel, lodging and greens fees.

Wardrobe
Shirts, shoes, hats, pants, skirts, rain jackets and sunglasses are part of a golfer's on-course attire.

How to Hit A Golf Ball...Becoming A Golfer Is As Easy As 1-2...

If you're an athlete or not, but want to learn EASILY how to hit a golf ball with precision and accuracy, then this is a must read!

First, the ball. Put the ball on the ground and casually (just relax in other words) look down at it. Stand as you normally do when you are standing alone. In this position, move the ball so that it is about a foot in front of your feet, roughly in line with your nose. (Imagine a string reaches from the tip of your nose to the middle of the golf ball). I call this the STARTING TRIANGLE; use this starting position with ANY club. That's half the battle right there!

Second, the golf clubs. Take the club in your hands. How? It's easy. Put your hands together (no gaps), with your dominant hand lowest on the club. That is, if you're right-handed, as I am, your left hand is top, and your right hand is directly beneath it. When you shake hands with someone? That is how you want your hands placed on the club. So, shake hands with the club, first your right hand, then your left hand, (if you're right-handed).

Third, the swing. The imaginary string from your nose to the ball? Now take that same string and put it from the middle of the ball to an inch or so behind the ball. That is where you want to put the bottom of the golf club (otherwise known as the face of the club head. If that club head had a real face, the center of it would be the nose...so put the nose an inch behind the ball, centered to the middle of the ball. Now, here's all you have to do: slowly swing the club back, about a yard or so and just SWEEP back through the ball, as if it were a dust ball on your kitchen floor. Sweep it all the way through, as if your were sweeping the dust ball to a specific point across the room. For longer hits, just sweep further back, and further through! That's it...now you can play golf better than the average Joe (or Josephine!) Go forth now and...Play golf!

Ping Rapture Tips

Golf clubs are produced by the enigmatic, American-made brand Ping, which consistently matches or outpaces its competitors in critical acclaim. The Rapture series embodies the brand: exacting pieces of equipment that require skill and precision both to build and to use. Unlike other brands that go to extremes design measures to correct flaws in golfers' ball-striking abilities, Rapture clubs are designed to get the best result from clean content and a swing that's on line. Rapture clubs can assist players in hitting shots long and straight as long as they fixate on technique.

Destination and Distance
The Ping Rapture series benefits a player whose game is suited to balls that fly low, or where windy playing conditions are the norm. Overall, Rapture clubs produce trajectories that are relatively low. Results may differ slightly depending on the player and the golf shafts employed, but Rapture club heads are made of lightweight Titanium for speed and Tungsten steel for strength and power. Unlike other brands, standard Rapture clubs are designed with a built-in intent to cause shots to arc right or left. The Rapture series features wide and deep club faces meant to add distance to shots hit squarely. Look and Feel

The physical appearance of Ping Rapture golf clubs could not be indicative of their intentions. And it bears reminding that the brand is named after the sound that resonated from the original putter that Ping was founded upon in 1959.

The Rapture V2 driver and fairway woods have elongated bodies that resemble jet engines. The Rapture series irons could be likened to chisels with enamel inlays: the club heads point upward and slightly outward to afford clear sight of the ball during set up and their weight distribution maximizes force at impact. Quality over Quantity

Ping's Rapture clubs may be best suited to golfers who would emulate the pro tournament players who endorse them. Compared to other brands, relatively few tour pros rely on Rapture clubs. Still, they are all victors of Masters,LPGA, Seniors and U.S. Amateur Open events.

Places to Buy Golf Supplies

Golfers always need new equipment. Whether it's golf balls, tees, new golf clubs, a golf bag or golf shoes, golfers are always ready to purchase new items for their game. There are opportunities to purchase new and used equipment at sporting goods stores, golf pro shops and online.

Sporting goods stores

The basics of the game can be bought at sporting goods stores. This is especially true for new golfers and high-handicappers that may not need custom equipment at this point in their development. Sporting goods stores sell golf clubs, golf bag, golf balls and tees. Some also sell shoes.

Golf specialty stores and pro shops

If you are looking for custom-made clubs or specialty clubs like a lob wedge or gap wedge, you will best be served by going to a golf specialty store or pro shop. They will take the assignment of fitting your clubs seriously and you will get measured for clubs. In addition to taking measurements like height, weight and arm length, you will go into a golf simulator where your swing speeds and launch angle will be measured before they will sell you clubs. You can also get basic items like balls, tees, golf clothes and golf bags at the pro shop.

The Golfinstock

You can buy golf equipment online at The Golfinstock. You can purchase clubs, golf bags, golf shoes, golf ball, range finders (they tell you the distance on each hole you are playing) as well as golf apparel. You can buy anything you need from the convenience of your own home just by logging on to your computer. If you order golf items, you can receive them within two days of your purchase.

Start a Golf Course

Golf is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and golf courses have been popping up all over, with more then 16,000 courses in the United States alone. American golfers spend more than $15 billion per year on course fees, clubs and other merchandise, making a functioning golf course a possibly lucrative business opportunity. Yet starting a golf course takes a lot of time, money and care before it begins to really pay off. However, for those passionate about the sport of golf, it can be an incredibly rewarding business venture, both monetarily and personally.

Before raising money, buying land or really investing in your own golf course, put together a business plan which will assess all the advantages and possible pitfalls. This will help you find out how much it is going to cost, how much money you will make back and how to target clients while warding off competitors. This type of planning also helps to preemptively stop problems and hazards in the future.

Build your golf course in a good location. Technically all you need is enough land to allow for 18 holes to be constructed, but how can your golf course stand out from the other thousands of golf courses around the country? Can it be built in a unique area, overlooking a city or the ocean? Should it be built in a place where there currently are no golf courses? This should all be taken into account when buying land.

Hire a golf course architectural firm or landscapers who have designed golf courses previously and know what they are doing. Golf courses shouldn't be terribly challenging but shouldn't be easy, either. They should offer a unique challenge for those playing the course and reveal beautiful scenery of the land itself, in hopes of rebuking the "good walk spoiled" for so-so golfers.

Invest in manpower and equipment to run the golf course. After construction, it is going to take some time for the grass to grow properly. And once the golf course has opened, it is a full-time, multi-person job to ensure the grass continues to grow and prosper so that it doesn't die.

Maintain the course and hold tournaments so you attract more people and can build a clientele. With a fun and beautiful course, golfers in the area will be sure to come back as long as they have a good experience. Time and money will need to be invested initially, but creating this experience for your golfers will pay off in the end.

Repair a Golf Club

Most golf club repair consists of replacing the shaft for a particular club head. If the head of the club itself is broken, then it's probably not worth fixing. The grips are also replaceable, which is not as complicated of a process as fixing a club's shaft, which requires a bit of instruction, time and care.

Remove the old shaft from the club head. This must be done by heating up the original epoxy with a heat gun and removing the two parts when the epoxy melts. Wear gloves to protect your hands and make sure you don't burn the old shaft if you plan on saving it.

Clean the hosel (the top part of the clubhead) of epoxy and anything else that may have become lodged in the area. Acetone will help with this. Make sure this is clean and dry before proceeding.

Trim the tip of the shaft by following the manufacturer's recommendation or by cutting it to the length that works for you. Once cut, use heavy grit sandpaper to shave down and smooth out the tip of a steel shaft. For a graphite shaft, remove all the paint from the tip with a sharp knife or razor.

Install the shaft by applying epoxy to the inside of the hosel, making sure to coat the entire surface. Then apply epoxy to the tip of the shaft and push it inside the hosel. Some clubs need a ferule, which is a plastic piece between the shaft and the hosel; apply epoxy to that and twist it onto part of the shaft. Tap the head of the club against the floor once the epoxy has started to dry, to ensure the head is connected to the shaft.

Once the epoxy has dried, cut the shaft to the proper length (the drying usually takes about 12 hours). Install your grips and take a few swings to make sure everything feels right.

Get a Golf Handicap

A golf handicap is a good thing to have; it helps you track your progress in the game, lets you compare yourself to others, and levels the playing field when playing against a better player.

Basically a golf handicap is the average number of strokes you score above par. For example if you normally shoot around an 85 for 18 holes, then your handicap would be around 14-15.

Several pieces of data go into the golf handicap system, including which tees you played from, the slope rating of the course (the courses difficulty) and the number of holes on the course.

Now that you know what a golf handicap is, you are ready to get yours. First you will need to play 5-10 rounds of golf in order to determine your average round. SAVE THE SCORECARDS! And follow all rules and do not cheat! Cheating will only lower your handicap and make you out to be a better player than you actually are.

Most golf courses offer a handicapping service. You just need to take your last 5-10 scorecards in and they will compute the scores and give you your handicap. Once you have the handicap, be sure to bring in your score card after every round so you can get your golf handicap updated.

There are also plenty of websites available online that will compute your handicap. Some are free and some charge.

Here is a website that I personally use that not only tracks your handicap but also tracks other stats such as fairways and greens hit. It is free all you have to do is sign up and log in. (I do not gain anything by sending you here it is just a good website that I found and currently use)

Good Luck and shoot low!

Golf Shafts Information

Golf shafts offer the golfer a wide variety of flexibility during thegolfswing. Shafts are made from a number of different materials. The golfer has many choices when it comes to the shaft of his clubs. However, those choices should be determined by the golfer and whether he is the type of golfer who regularly gets great distance but struggles with accuracy or is normally a straight hitter who doesn't get a lot of distance.

Steel Shafts

Steel-shafted clubs do not offer the kind of flexibility that other clubs have. Steel shafts are stiffer, which helps golfers who are looking for accuracy in their shots. Steel shafts are preferred by golfers who have more than enough power on their own to send the ball 250 yards or more.

Graphite Shafts

Graphite is a light material that is easier for older or smaller golfers to swing than steel shafts. Graphite will also deaden vibrations that are felt in the hands and elbows. Graphite shafts are quite flexible and will provide extra distance because most golfers can generate club speed. However, accuracy and control are often issues.

Titanium

This is a relatively new material for golf clubs and it is quite light and easy to swing. It also muffles the vibrations on less-than-perfect contact and that makes it a comfortable fit. While the golfer can get more speed through the hitting zone than with a steel shaft, the titanium shaft is somewhat stiffer than graphite.

Senior Flex

Older golfers tend to need the most flexible clubs that are manufactured. As the years have gone by, most golfers can't whip the club through the hitting zone the way they did when they were younger. Senior flex clubs have a higher percentage of graphite in them than most clubs in order to provide greater club head speed.

Extra Stiff

Bigger, stronger golfers who tend to hit the ball all over the golf course and struggle consistently with accuracy can use extra stiff shafts. These clubs will stay straight longer through the hitting zone and help the golfer stay in the short grass. Golfers who lack distance should not use these clubs.

Start Playing Golf

Say the word golf and more often than not, people would think of the word green. This is only understandable since the game is being played in an outdoor setting. The greenery of the golf course makes up the perfect picture of a playing field. When you compare golf to other sports, it stands out because they do not utilize a standard playing area. This means that unlike other famous ball games, the playing field varies when you move from one location to another. Their designs are unique, depending upon the preference of the land developer or course designer. Golf courses can either be composed of either 9 or 18 holes.

The players are more fondly called as golfer and they employ different kinds of clubs in trying to hit a ball into a hole. The goal is just like any other ball game, which is to make the ball enter the hole. This should be achieved using the lowest possible number of strokes. One can play by his lonesome or he can invite his peers for a team effort, depending on the situation.

A typical round of golf is played with the number of holes in a particular order. Most of the time, a round involves 18 holes. Now, if you are caught in a nine-hole course, you will be required to play two successive nine-hole rounds.

How does the game begin? Well, the golfer has to hit the ball from the teeing box, which is what the starting point is called. Then, he uses a drive, or a long distance shot across the fairway so that the ball can travel for a very long distance. When the ball comes to a stop, the golfer can choose from among a number of strokes for his follow up. It could be a lay-up, an approach or a green. When the golf ball approaches the nearest area near the hole, a putt is performed.

Do you think the whole process sounds uncomplicated? The answer may be a yes or a no, depending on the overall condition. The drawback is if you will encounter major obstacles like a rough, or areas of long grass, a bunker and the notorious water hazard. They are dreaded because they pose a very challenging time for any player. Then there is also the probability that a heavy wind and a short rain can interfere with your concentration. For professional players, they still have to consider the cheering and jeering of the crowd.

Golfers can choose between two options as they travel the course. They can either walk or drive in motorized carts. They can also play alone or enjoy the time with their friends and helpers. A typical helper is a caddy. Aside from accompanying the player, they also carry and manage the golfer's equipment. Veteran caddies can even give insights to beginning players on how to improve their craft.

Golfers usually don a preppy cotton shirt paired with a pair of lightweight shorts. They include the ubiquitous sun visor as a protection. When the cold season arrives, they usually opt for a pair of slacks and thick jacket to keep them from feeling chilly. For those who foresee a light drizzle, a cap is brought along in preparation. The more health conscious ones bring a sturdy umbrella for better protection.

It is undeniable that golf can bring about many advantages. It is good for the health because one can derive a flexibility exercise from it. Cardiovascular workout is also expected if one walks in a brisk manner from one hole to another. Your respiratory system will also thank you for the fresh air that you have supplied it. Lastly, it can clear the mind because the greenery is an ideal spot for musing or meditation.

Golf is also a sport

It is an undeniable fact that sports have become a favorite pastime of people in the modern society. The most popular are ball games, especially when played by teams, as manifested by the active participation of fans during basketball, football and volleyball games. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise to hear that the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States is making a tidy profit. The same is true when discussing World Cup tournaments where rabid football fanatics from European, African, Latin American and Asian countries attend in groups to watch their compatriots play in an exciting manner.

These days, golf does not want to get left behind. Since it can be played by one person or by a team, it has also lured its own set of appreciative viewers. Even advertisers and sponsors are not lacking because multinational firms are paying for their brands to be posted in the apparels of the top golfers.

The goal is a no-brainer. The player needs to hit the ball in a hole. He starts the game by posing in a teeing box and from there, utilized various strikes so that the ball will enter the hole. Do you think this sound like a simple routine? Initially, it does. However, when you are already in the playing field, you might get some jitters. Add to that the wrath of Mother Nature like heavy winds, strong rains and even the sporadic thunderstorm while on a golf course. Even seasoned professional players even have to deal with the rowdy crowd who are watching their every move. They should prepare themselves for a wide range of reactions.

Nevertheless, despite the challenges in this particular sport, an increasing number of people are still enticed to participate and become masters at it. This should not really come as a surprise since it presents many advantages. Read on for the benefits that may be reaped while playing this awesome game.

The first advantage is that it promotes exercise. Your body will be in for a challenging workout because swinging a heavy club requires much effort. It also improves your flexibility since the side muscles of the torso are stretched to their limits. With the proper body mechanics, the golfer becomes more tones and has a solid core. For those who are in need of aerobic exercises, golf is a great cardiovascular exercise when you indulge in brisk walking.

The second advantage is that it provides socialization. Man is an inherently social creature. He can satisfy this need by having a game with his friends on the course. He can also free his mind from all useless worries and anxieties just by staring into the wide open space of the fairway. In a matter of minutes, he will feel rejuvenated.

If you are an entrepreneur, a round of golf can serve as a good start in negotiating business deals. Actually, many high level career executives prefer commencing and closing their transactions while in the middle of the game. Therefore, if you want to be with the best, brush up on your golfing skills right now.

Lastly, playing golf can inculcate virtues of patience, hard work and prudence. It is more than a physical game that requires pure brawn. It is also a mental game that calls for a meticulous analysis and consideration, especially in selecting the clubs to be used and in evaluating what is the current weather condition.

Golf is not all good

Whoever said that golf is an interesting sport was right. It is both loved and reviled by an equal number of people. Those who support it do so because of the supposed perks while those who hate it enumerate its disadvantages. Are you undecided on which side to lean on? Well, here is a detailed list of the disadvantages that can assist you in making a significant decision. Read it thoroughly before making the correct choice.

First of all, playing golf is something that is reserved for the elite because it requires a deep bank account. If you don't have sufficient funds, you cannot play well. How can you when you don't have cash to pay for the golf club membership? You can't also afford to buy luxurious golf clubs, pay the trainer, caddy and the use of the cart. If you are just a nobody who aims to become a superstar in this field, you need more than skills. It is imperative that you have courage so that you can pursue your passion. You must continuously strive to become better so that advertisers will notice you and offer you to be their endorser. If you fail to do this, you will simply rot along the way.

Additionally, this game is not for the weak of heart since it is more than just a physical competition. It requires mental alertness as well as meticulous analysis. One must have high intellectual skills to assess whether the weather condition is appropriate for teeing or not.

The second disadvantage is that it doesn't contribute much to one's physical health. Other sports would usually make you sweat because they are high impact. Golf does not belong to that classification because teeing does not burn that many calories. Also, it is quite disconcerting to note that most players opt to take the easy route and just ride their golf carts as they travel from one area to another. They also lose the chance of strengthening their upper body when they just let their caddies carry all their equipments.

So if you want to remove a few kilos from your weight, develop your flexibility or tone your body, this sport should not make it to the shortlist. You must look towards other games that can provide you a more strenuous physical workout.

Third, if you are into golf, you will be crucified as a certified destroyer of Mother Nature. This is because the greenery that you are playing in is a product of well controlled landscaping by property developers. Obviously, there is not a fairway in this world that looks unruly. They are neatly manicured and showered with liters upon liters of water every single day. This means that water is being used purely for aesthetic purposes.

The wide expanse of land that is used to make a nine whole golf course is simply a waste of resources. If you double this figure for 18-hole golf course that amounts to a big space that could have been used for other more meaningful purposes. It is not a very feasible plan to implement especially with the increasing number of people living in shanties.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen! Hopefully, this article would make you realize that golf is unlike any other sport. Be careful before making a decision so that you will not feel guilty later on.

Don't Buy Expensive Clubs Yet

You have decided you like this new game, but you really aren't playing as well as you would like.  Your friends are beating you by large margins and you would like to even the score.

It's time to drop $300 on that new fancy square backed driver with the snazzy stripped shaft that all the touring pros are using.  Wait a minute, maybe you should buy the $200 wedge that Tiger or Phil uses and that $200 putter would make anyone proud.

I am sorry, now is not the time to run up more debt on the old credit card.  Superior equipment will help an average, better than average or superior golfer.  You don't qualify!

To really justify top end and expensive equipment you need to have developed a consistent swing.  Right now no two balls are going anywhere nears each other from your clubs.  Do you really believe it is all the clubs' fault?

A good professional or golf shop employee will want to fit the clubs to your body and swing.  Matching the clubs to a reliable trustworthy swing will allow the clubs to produce superior performance for that one golfer.  Would you like to match the clubs to your shanked shot, fat shot, or flubbed shot?  Oh, and what putting stroke are we talking about?

You should spend your money on three things.  A decent set of used golf clubs, a good training book or video and a useful training aide.  This will allow you to improve and refine your game before spending a ton of money.

Top golfers like to have the newest and best every year or two.  They trade in their slightly used top brand equipment and then brag to their buddies.  You can learn to play this game with two or three year old brand name equipment without destroying your budget.  Make sure to add an inexpensive sand and gap wedge since many standard sets do not come with these clubs.

It is normally best to use standard length and lie clubs.  Custom clubs would have both of these items adjusted to the golfer, but you really aren't ready.  Unless you are very tall or very short standard length clubs will be close enough to fit your needs.

Pick your training book or video carefully.  You are going to follow the material faithfully.  Any good source will do, since they are going to teach you using a proven method.  Following good advice from one consistent source will allow you to improve without confusion.  Multiple competing sources will confuse you and slow your progress.

Choose one training aide for your swing and one more for your putting.  Practice with those aides only.  You are trying to learn one consistent swing.  Not a little bit of five different people's swings.

Right now will not be the best time to read every article in every golf magazine.  Each author is qualified, but the changes in focus or mind set will only make it harder for you to picture one complete swing.  Articles intended for better golfers will only add to your confusion.

Patience, practice and time will allow the training materials and aides to help you develop a real golf swing.  You will begin to notice that more balls fly straighter than ever before.  You won't always hit greens but your misses will be much closer.

Learn to estimate the distance each club will fly.  The best place to do this is on par three greens.  The distance to the green is normally well marked and you are hitting a real golf ball.  The range is a great place to practice your swing mechanics, but the range golf ball is frequently less responsive so your carry distance will not be accurate.

As you get more comfortable with your new swing, you will almost surely see the distance each club carries increase.  Yes, you have probably gotten a little stronger, but actually you are hitting the ball more consistently and that produces greater distance.  You will almost surely hit one or even two less clubs to get into the same par three greens.

You still have a long way to go and much to learn, but now is the time to consider those new clubs.  You have a swing that you can trust and repeat.  Custom fitted clubs will compliment your new swing.

Golf Fitness Routines: Which Ones Should You Choose?

Staying active in the whole play of the 18-hole course requires a perfect blend of stamina, strength, flexibility as well as balance all of which are achievable when a player engages in appropriate golf fitness routines.

Choosing what fits your needs will help you address your weaknesses and therefore will be of great help in the improvement of your game. However, with a number exercises to choose from plus other compounding factors such as possible monetary investments and time availability, which ones should you engages in. Here are some things to consider:

  • effective routines will be those types that you can consistent perform and stick with for a longer period of time - This implies commitment on your end and proper to choosing a particular routine, you should be able to see all its angles and not just try it for the sake of trying only to curtail it a few days after starting the program.
  • Go for exercises, which can be performed in the comfort of your home – as most players hardly have time to play, allotting time for fitness routines might just be additional load for you. So eliminate those that require you to enroll in gyms and fitness centers because apart from you are required to go the gym perhaps on a weekly basis, you are also increasing  your financial obligations by trying out this sport.
  • Consider routine stuff that are quite easy to execute and those that do not require specialized equipment or the aid of fitness instructors. This is especially true if you are somewhat tight in your budget. In addition, you must be aware that your enticement for playing this sport might not be for a lifetime and perhaps one of these days you will wake up not wanting to play golf anymore. In this case, all those equipment might just be wasted investments of your short fancy for the sport. So choose simpler routines to avoid complications on investments.
  • Be involved on exercises that you can have for a lifetime, that is you need not do it for the sole purpose of improving your game but those that in general help you achieve a healthier state.

A good play requires a sound and prepared mind and physique. Your muscles should be prepared enough to sustain the requirements of the game and at the same time eliminate onset of tension, which may result to injuries. Engaging then in appropriate and easy to maneuver golf fitness routines will help improve your game.

Steel Or Graphite Golf Clubs - What's Right For You?

A professional golfer understands the role played by golf club in his game. While an amateur to game may be comfortable with an old golf club but a professional tries to identify a golf club that not only suits his needs but also playing style.

Today a golfer can make his pick from a golf club made from steel or graphite. Unlike the steel golf clubs, the graphite clubs are of recent origin. Though both, one can enjoy many advantages but selection needs to depend on comfort of player.

Some of differences between steel and graphite golf clubs are mentioned below:

Steel Vs Graphite Golf Clubs:

1. The popularity of the graphite golf clubs arose on account of the properties enjoyed by it. golf clubs made of graphite are lighter than a steel golf club. This makes it highly appreciated by the smaller built and less powerful golfers. A graphite golf club weigh 50 grams lower than a steel club making it possible for women and the senior citizens to make a good swing as they are not restricted by the weight of the club. While a steel golf club weighs around 110 to 125 grams, a graphite golf club weighs around 60 to 72 grams. The lighter weight of the graphite golf clubs result in lower pressure on the back and shoulders of the golfers.

2. Steel shaft golf clubs are highly suited for shorter distances whereas the graphite golf clubs are used in woods and drivers where the distance of the swing is high.

3. The vibrations generated in a graphite golf club are lower than that in steel. As the graphite absorbs a greater part of the vibrations, it makes it highly convenient for those suffering from arthritis and similar ailments.

4. The flexibility of length enjoyed by the graphite golf clubs unlike the steel clubs has been another cause for its popularity over the years. The ability to customize the fitting options make it ideal for shorter people who need not compromise on their game on account of the height.

Although the steel golf clubs are less expensive than a graphite golf club, the lighter weight resulting in a greater swing speed and larger distance coverage has made it popular even amongst the professional PGA golfers besides the amateurs.

Why Are Graphite Golf Clubs Popular?

Graphite golf clubs have become popular over the recent years. What was initially well-liked by high-handicapped golfers, now admired even by the professional PGA golfers? This article aims to highlight reasons on graphite golf clubs as become much popular now.

Before identifying the advantages of graphite golf clubs, let us take a look into its creation. These clubs consist of graphite-cum-resin sheets known as pre-preg wrapped into steel rod called mandrel. The graphite is bonded on mandrel using a layer of cellophane that then placed in oven to ensure its durability. Once done, the uneven edges removed to make them smoother and suitable for the game.

Weight: One of the major features that have added to the popularity of these golf clubs is its lighter weight. Unlike the steel shaft clubs, the graphite golf clubs weigh approximately 50 grams lower making it ideal in the hands of women and senior citizens. With the lighter weight permitting a better and farther swing, these clubs are resorted to even by the professionals while playing in the woods where the distance covered matters. The property of being lightweight takes out the stress on the back and shoulder of the golfer while making a swing.

Speed: The lightweight feature of the graphite golf clubs make it possible to cover longer distances as compared to steel clubs which are highly suited for controlled movements.

Flexibility: The flexibility to make adjustments to the length of the club takes out the obstacles faced by shorter golfers. With height no longer a setback in the game, it helps to add distance to the shots.

Durability: Though expensive than the steel golf clubs, proper maintenance can make them last for a life time. Care should be taken to provide adequate protection from excessive heat as the rise in temperature can adversely impact the binding of the graphite fibers on the golf club.

Impact: With graphite acting as an effective shock absorber, the degree of impact experienced after the swings are lower in the graphite golf clubs. This property has made it possible for the people suffering from ailments like arthritis easier to enjoy the game.

In short, the graphite shafts in the golf clubs which makes it lighter permits greater speed resulting in huge distance coverage. This has made the graphite golf clubs a popular choice amongst the golfers.

8 Places to Find Golf Employment

The popularity of golf has really taken off in recent years. To accommodate the many people who play, take lessons, watch, or read about the sport, golf employment has become much more readily available, in a variety of interesting businesses.

Golf courses: There are many more golf courses in operation today than there was twenty years ago, and every one of them offers dozens of golf employment opportunities. In order to run smoothly, golf courses need groundskeepers to care for the turf, operators and technicians for the equipment needed on a golf course, instructors to provide training for the golf course’s members, and managers to make sure everything runs smoothly. Additionally, many golf courses have clubhouses and golf stores, both of which require sufficient staff in order to provide members with their conveniences.

Golf resorts: Golfing vacations are becoming more and more popular, as the explosion of golf resorts has indicated. A golf resort requires all of the same staff as a golf course does, except that a golf resort is often bigger and therefore requires more employees. Additionally, a golf resort needs a larger establishment to house their guests, and with a bigger building and more services comes a larger staff: housekeepers, front desk employees, and an expanded kitchen staff all contribute to the success of a golf resort.

Golf schools: As golf becomes more and more popular, more schools are opening every day to teach the sport. These schools are a wonderful source of golf employment for those who would rather teach the sport as the next best thing to playing it themselves.

Golf stores: There are a variety of retail businesses that sell golf equipment, clothing and accessories. Some stores, such as those small stores located in golf course clubhouses, may sell only products that relate to golf. Other stores, such as large sports stores, sell equipment and clothing for a variety of different sports, golf included. Both types of stores offer excellent opportunities for golf equipment, as they both have a need for sales associates who know about golf well enough to give their customers the best service possible.

Community centers: Believe it or not, your neighborhood community center may be able to provide you with golf employment. Community centers frequently offer residents fun, seasonal programs, such as classes on art, dance, and golf. Even if your community center doesn’t already offer a golf program, you may be able to get a job just by suggesting one.

Junior high or high schools: Extracurricular activities are an important part of most junior high and high schools. Whether you are a teacher or just a golf enthusiast living in the area, you may be able to score a part time job by suggesting golf lessons or a golf club as an after school activity.

Golf publications: Most people wouldn’t think of it, but golf publications offer another source of golf employment. There are at least half-dozen golf magazines on the shelves of any well-stocked bookstore, and every one of them needs writers, editors, and photographers who know all about golf.

On your own: Golf is an industry that leaves plenty of room for entrepreneurs. As an experienced golfer, you can offer private golf lessons, meeting your clients wherever they enjoy golfing the most. You can also translate your knowledge and experience into written form by publishing biographies about famous golfers, travel guides that discuss the pros and cons various golf resorts around the world or even how-to manuals for golf enthusiasts who want to learn more about the sport.

As you can see, there are many places of employment for golf enthusiasts. The golf industry is so popular that anyone with the right education and experience will never have to worry about having reliable golf employment.

Hold Your Club the Right Way!

The snow is beginning to melt, and it is almost time to get back out onto the golf course. Take a few minutes to review a few things, stretch a few muscles and maybe improve your game a little bit.

Check and make sure your clubs are the right height. Your clubs should be as high as your waist, no higher, no lower. If there is a height problem, then you will not have the best swing possible.

What about your glove. Golf gloves not only improve your comfort level, but they also can make your grip even tighter. Your grip is just about the most important thing to work on. Your grip can make all your shots even better.

A firm grip is very easy to accomplish. All you need to do is wrap your left hand around the club, with your thumb pointing down the shaft, parallel to the club face. Then, place your right hand around the left hand so your middle, ring and pinky fingers are wrapped around your thumb. Make sure your grip is firm.

Keep your wrists as tight as possible. The less you move your wrists, the better the shot will be. Instead, use your left thumb to guide the club to where it needs to be. Just your thumb. Keep those wrists as still as you possibly can.

If you follow these few tips, you should see an improvement in your game very quickly. Don't forget to keep your head down until you have hit the ball!!

Left Handed Golf Clubs

When the occasional ball under or behind the most awkward of obstructions might sometimes lead even a right hander to dream of a set of left handed golf clubs, they are no joke, with just as specific and precise design required as those used much more commonly for right hander’s.

Not simply putting the shaft on the other side of the head, which might seem a logical enough solution to the layman, the whole thing has to be a carefully designed mirror image and as such, pretty well all parts are specific to left handed golf clubs in manufacture.

For left-handed men and women, adult and child, there is a whole specific range created alongside most of the brands that are made. And when a new, upgraded product is released, these special golf clubs within that brand and range won't be far behind, if at all.

In addition, although it might be an easy solution for manufacturers, golf clubs for left-handers are not just made in matched sets. No, there are also individual clubs available so that connoisseurs of the game can create their own bespoke sets to get the best from their own, particular game.

Being left handed can be something of a curse to those with the affliction. Whilst they themselves are perfectly happy with it, despite their being disadvantaged sometimes in a majority right hander’s world, they probably have grown up with the occasional unfair comment, just because they are in a minority (around 8-15% of the population). Sadly, that's the way of the world.

It's still a very substantial number of potential customers and the world's leading manufacturers have ensured that their efforts in making left handed golf clubs are every bit as good as those for right hander’s.

Yet things are not always as they seem. Choosing left doesn't always make it right! You see some people are left handed for some things and right handed for others. It's a strange quirk of those individuals who might write, right handed, yet use left handed golf clubs on the course, because they prefer it, feel more comfortable and most likely play better that way! Strange but true.

Many well known golfers have played left-handed, yet in real life are right-handed, perhaps more to do with how they were taught not be than their true characteristic. Golfers like Phil Mickelson, a multi-championship winning left handed golfer, even though he too is right handed in real life.

Often, usually because of being forced at school (especially for older people, when schooling was more draconian!), the way people were encouraged to write will be carried through your life, but that doesn't mean it's natural.

So, when there's a choice, like when learning a game like, golf clubs and old enough to make one's own decisions, people defer back to their preference.

Even if a golfer has the capability to be ambidextrous (use both right and left hands as a preference pretty equally), only a certain number of clubs can be carried, by the rules of the game, so a choice has to be made. And it is usually the choice of how they feel most comfortable when holding the club.

In a world of continuing change and one where commercial requirements drive punters to buy the 'next best thing' to improve their game that little sliver more, manufacturers continue to make design changes on both right and left handed golf clubs.

Those changes that develop the technology for right-handers are just as effectively applied when left handed golf clubs are designed and manufactured too.

So, if that's what you need, feel secure in the understanding that the manufacturer of the next set of left handed golf clubs you buy to suit your left handedness, will have applied just the same technology to yours as the more popular right handed sets they sell as well.

Buying Golf Clubs - 11 Things You Need To Know

For most golfers buying a new set of clubs is as important as buying a car. It's important to get it right because you can spend a lot of money and you'll be using them for many years to come. If you haven't realized it already golf equipment gets very technical. For the very best players a misplaced 'C.O.G' or 'M.O.I' can severely affect their game. For the rest of us a few simple decisions will help you select the right golf clubs for you and avoid wasting your hard earned cash. Let’s take a look at what you need to know.

How much you spend is obviously up to you. Golf equipment can cost a small fortune especially if you opt for custom made stuff. If you're a beginner it’s probably a better idea to look for a less expensive range or even buy second hand (check for signs of rusting and degradation if you do). This game is a tough nut to crack and not everyone develops an addiction to it. You don't want a thousand dollars worth of golf clubs gathering dust in the closet! When you get to a decent level or are already there it then becomes more cost effective to go for the higher end products.

The majority of your golf bag will be taken up by the irons - generally 3 through to 9. The quality of the shaft is key for these clubs and industry standard is for the irons to be made out of steel. Take note - if your swing speed is slow or your swing speed is decreasing due to age consider buying graphite shaft irons. They are lighter and can help you get back some distance.

The flex of the shaft is another key component. Again slower swing speeds require a more flexible shaft. The extra whip generated helps add yards to your shots. This is not helpful to the golfer who is hitting their 7 iron 150 yards or more as flexible shafts tend to be harder to control at that level. These types of golfer should look at the stiffer range.

A feature of the 21st century golf bag is the hybrid clubs. A mix between the fairway wood and standard iron this club is known to be easier to hit than long irons and can be used in many situations. Generally considered a must for high handicappers and beginners you will also find that the pros have adopted them also. It’s certainly worth considering having these in your bag rather than the long irons. If, like me, you tend to spend a little too much time in the rough then these golf clubs can be your savior.

When you are making your selection be mindful that golf clubs are generally made to a standard length. When you set up, the club head should sit flat on the ground and the club should fall below your waist. The standard length is acceptable for most golfers but if you're particularly small or tall it might be a better idea to go for a custom made set. This will give you a better chance of solid contact.

The club head comes in all shapes and sizes. You hear much about the debate between cavity backed and blades. The cavity backed club head has a larger sweet spot so is easier to hit but at the cost of feel and control. This is why better players tend to prefer the blades.

The driver and fairway woods usually have graphite shafts to assist in generating club head speed. As with irons the amount of flex you need depends on how much speed you tend to generate.

Loft of the driver head is often overlooked. Slow swingers want a higher loft as it helps get higher trajectory off the tee and ultimately more carry down the fairway. Loft tends to range between 10 and 15 degrees. Better players should opt for the lower end of that range.

Fortunately for some of us you can select the angle of the face of the driver to offset any tendencies such as slicing or hooking. If you slice go for a closed face and if you hook go for an open face. The difference can be between hitting the rough regularly and getting down that fairway.

The putter is all about feel. You need to be able to produce a smooth stroke to get the right contact on the golf ball. As a result there are a great many variations in the type of putter you can buy. See which one sits right with you. The heavier putters can help beginners because they promote a less jerky technique and reduce the chance of the golfer giving up on the putt as they hit it.

The grip has to feel comfortable. You can have golf clubs rewrapped and this may come in useful if you have small or large hands.

Everyone has their own tastes so not all the tips will apply but it’s certainly worth bearing these pointers in mind. Buying clubs can be a sizeable investment and the last thing you want is to find you've chosen a set that you simply cannot get on with. One final tip is to make sure you are honest about your game with the store attendants when selecting clubs. Yes, they are trying to sell to you but they will want you to get the right clubs. It’s no use saying you hit the ball dead straight and play off a 4 handicap when you really have a horrendous slice and struggle to break 100. The needs of these two types of player are very different!
