A golf handicap is a good thing to have; it helps you track your progress in the game, lets you compare yourself to others, and levels the playing field when playing against a better player.
Basically a golf handicap is the average number of strokes you score above par. For example if you normally shoot around an 85 for 18 holes, then your handicap would be around 14-15.
Several pieces of data go into the golf handicap system, including which tees you played from, the slope rating of the course (the courses difficulty) and the number of holes on the course.
Now that you know what a golf handicap is, you are ready to get yours. First you will need to play 5-10 rounds of golf in order to determine your average round. SAVE THE SCORECARDS! And follow all rules and do not cheat! Cheating will only lower your handicap and make you out to be a better player than you actually are.
Most golf courses offer a handicapping service. You just need to take your last 5-10 scorecards in and they will compute the scores and give you your handicap. Once you have the handicap, be sure to bring in your score card after every round so you can get your golf handicap updated.
There are also plenty of websites available online that will compute your handicap. Some are free and some charge.
Here is a website that I personally use that not only tracks your handicap but also tracks other stats such as fairways and greens hit. It is free all you have to do is sign up and log in. (I do not gain anything by sending you here it is just a good website that I found and currently use)
Good Luck and shoot low!
